barronsFebruary 28 - Family Friendly Clay Art Event with Jessica Berkowitz AB'79

Join fellow alumni and their families for a fun afternoon of clay art sculpting at the Clay Art Center in Port Chester

Clay Art Center in Port Chester, New York, is a nationally recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to the advancement and practice of ceramic art. Katherine Choy, a leader of the Newcomb pottery aesthetic, joined by master potter Henry Okamoto, founded the center as a communal studio in 1957. With Choy's untimely death in 1958, Okamoto pursued her legacy for the rest of his life. At one time a lone beacon of clay artistry on the East Coast, Clay Art Center became a haven for clay artists, many of whom pursued significant careers in ceramics and influenced contemporary ceramic practice.

Our class at the Clay Art Center will be an opportunity for participants to create a cupcake-themed keepsake box.  A Clay Art Center instructor will explain the project and assist participants.  Children should be accompanied by an adult.

Preparation

  • Dress comfortably. We recommend bringing an apron or wearing clothes that you don't mind getting dirty with clay. We have communal aprons available in the studio.

  • Avoid wearing rings, bracelets, or watches.

  • Optional: bring a hand towel.

Other Information

  • Materials: Clay, firing, and materials are included.

  • Firing-process: While we make every effort to handle student work with the utmost care, we cannot guarantee perfect results because of the fragile and unpredictable nature of clay and the firing process. Works might crack or break during the firing or glazing process, and glazes can have unpredictable results. Our classes are geared towards a creative “making” experience rather than an end product.

  • Artwork: Students will choose one project to keep, and then choose a glaze color from our studio selection for the one piece.

  • Pickup: Artwork can take about 4 weeks to be fired and ready for pick up. We hold artwork for up to three months after the class date. Please make sure you are able to pick up your work in a timely manner. We will email you when your artwork is ready for pickup.

  • Clean-up: Students and participants are expected to assist the teacher with cleanup after the lesson is over.
