Monday, October, 20 - “Obesity, Inflammation and Aging" with Harvard Medical School Professor Caroline M. Apovian, MD
7:30 PM - 8:30 PM Thursday, 20 October, 2025 (Timezone: Eastern)
Dr. Caroline Apovian, Co-Director of the Center for Weight Management and Wellness at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School discusses a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to weight loss and inflammation.
The discovery and skyrocketing popularity of GLP-1 medications is revolutionizing physicians' and patients' treatment and understanding of obesity. Medications intended to stimulate insulin sensitivity to improve blood sugar control and promote weight loss have also been observed to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. Research is in progress to confirm that GLP-1 medications decrease the risks of Alzheimer's disease, dementia, bulemia and schizophrenia.
The efficacy of GLP-1 medications in a broad array of medical problems suggests that their positive results may reflect a reduction in systemic inflammation. Taken alone, medications have limited effect, so a multidisciplinary approach to anti-inflammatory healthcare including nutrition and lifestyle changes is appropriate.

Caroline M. Apovian, MD, FACP, FTOS, DABOM is Co-Director of the Center for Weight Management and Wellness at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Apovian has published over ten books and over 200 peer-reviewed original research and review articles on obesity and nutrition. Formerly the Chairperson of the Endocrine Society Guidelines for Medical Treatment of Obesity and Nutrition Consultant for NASA, Dr. Apovian now directs the Brigham and Women's Hospital program focusing on the assessment and treatment of obesity and its comorbidities.
Dr. Apovian's current research interests include the effect of weight change on fatty tissue metabolism, inflammation, heart disease and diabetes.
