March 5 - Bioethics and Human Flourishing: AI in Medicine and the Bioethical Principle of (Social) Justice and Health Equity

Constantine Psimopoulos, MEd, MBE (HMS '23), Dr.Bioethics - Instructor on Bioethics and Senior Administrator of the Human Flourishing Program, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Department of Epidemiology, Harvard Medical School Department of Global Health and Social Medicine will lead a discussion of bioethical considerations implicit in the use of AI in Medicine.
Constantine Psimopoulos will engage key current questions raised by the use of AI in Medicine including: Is the use of AI in Medicine uniformly beneficent or are aspects of its use worrisome? How can future doctors, scientists and clinicians adhere to the principle of nonmaleficence, "first do no harm" in the context of AI? What biases are embedded in AI algorithms, and how do these affect the goals of social justice and health equity? Should bioethics conversations be focusing more on human flourishing; how do we define of this? Considerations from the fields of philosophy, theology, law, anthropology and social science will be explored.

Constantine Psimopoulos is a graduate of Harvard Medical School - receiving an MBE degree at the Center of Bioethics. The recipient of the inaugural HMS Dean's Scholarship, Professor Psimopoulos delivered the valedictory address at his HMS graduation. He is an adjunct Professor of Ethics, the Senior Program Administrator for the Human Flourishing Program of the Harvard Initiative on Health, Spirituality and Religion, and a researcher in Global Health and Social Medicine in the HMS Center for Bioethics. Professor Psimopoulos co-teaches the Responsible Conduct in Science course - a new requirement for doctoral students at HMS.
