Harvard-Radcliffe Club of Westchester

Led by Dr. Jerry Mechling, retired Lecturer in Public Policy from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government, this talk is based on 50 years of practice and research on the uses of information technologies, especially in governments. As digital capabilities have grown explosively more powerful, they have been applied more extensively throughout the value chains, bringing increasingly large and disruptive changes to jobs, work flows, and institutions.

 

Only in the past decade, however, have they required new kinds of leaders and fundamentally different priorities. The digital future is thus recently quite new with huge stakes yet to be determined - for good or ill. At Harvard, Dr. Mechling founded and directed the Leadership for a Networked World Program. He has also been an Assistant to the Mayor of New York City, a Director of the Office of Management and Budget for the City of Boston, and a Vice President for Public Sector Research at Gartner, Inc., a global firm focused on information technology issues. He graduated in the Harvard Class of 1965 where he was Harvard National Scholar, a Class Marshal, and a 3-year letterman in football. He received his Master's and PhD degrees in Economics and Public Affairs from Princeton University.
