barronsMarch 21st - "The Marshall Plan" at Ruby's in Rye

Join us for dinner at Ruby's in Rye for a talk on American foreign policy by Benn Steil, senior fellow and director of international economics at the Council of Foreign Relations, and author of "The Marshall Plan: Dawn of the Cold War."

Steil’s “The Marshall Plan” chronicles Secretary of State’s George Marshall’s plan to reconstruct western Europe as a bulwark against communist authoritarianism.  The plan was formally announced in a speech at Harvard’s 1947 Commencement and was a bulwark of American foreign policy for decades.

Steil was just named the winner of the New York Historical Society's Barbara and David Zalaznick Book Prize, awarded each year to the best work in the field of American history or biography. (Past winners have included Ron Chernow for "George Washington" and Doris Kearns Goodwin for "Team of Rivals.")

In "The Marshall Plan," Steil tells the story behind the birth of this ambitious undertaking and the related creation of NATO, the E.U. and a Western identity that continues to shape world events. His gripping narrative takes us through the seminal post-war episodes, such as the Prague coup, the Berlin blockade, and the division of Germany, and continuing to the current day to underscore how effective the Plan was.

As The New York Times Book Review noted, “Trenchant and timely…an ambitious, deeply researched narrative that…provides a fresh perspective on the coming Cold War.”

The book is also the winner of the 2018 American Academy of Diplomacy Douglas Dillon Award and noted historian Paul Kennedy (author of “The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers” commented that this is “[A] brilliant book…by far the best study yet” of the gripping history behind the Marshall Plan and its long-lasting influence on our world.
