Morris P. Fiorina, the leading American political scientist and voting expert, former Harvard professor and currently the Wendt Family Professor of Political Science at Stanford and a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, joins us for a talk, moderated by John Berman ’95, CNN News, about:

Morris P. Fiorina is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and the Wendt Professor of Political Science at Stanford University.  A noted expert in elections and public opinion, Fiorina is well known for such definitive works as:
  • Representatives, Roll Calls, and Constituencies; Congress--Keystone of the Washington Establishment
  • Retrospective Voting in American National Elections; The Personal Vote (coauthored with Bruce Cain and John Ferejohn); and
  • Divided Government; Civic Engagement in American Democracy (co-edited with Theda Skocpol)

His most recent books include “Culture War? The Myth of a Polarized America” (with Samuel Abrams and Jeremy Pope), and “Unstable Majorities: Polarization, Party Sorting and Political Stalemate.”

 
 

Fiorina received his undergraduate degree from Allegheny College and a PhD from the University of Rochester.  He taught at CalTech (1972-1982), before teaching at Harvard for two decades (1982-1998), ultimately as the Frank Thompson Professor of Government from 1996-98).  He joined the faculty of Stanford and the Hoover Institution in 1998. 

Fiorina has served on the editorial boards of a dozen journals in Political Science, Political Economy, Law, and Public Policy, and from 1986-1990 served as Chairman of the Board of Overseers of the American National Election Studies. He is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Academy of Political and Social Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences. He has received Career Achievement Awards from the American Political Science Association’s Organized Sections on Elections, Public Opinion, and Voting Behavior, and Political Organizations and Parties.

John Berman ’95 of CNN News is joining to moderate the talk.  He is currently the co-anchor of “New Day” on CNN, which he joined in 2012.  He started in journalism as the head writer for “World News Tonight with Peter Jennings” and then worked as a regular on-air contributor on ABC’s core broadcasts.  Across his career, John was an embedded reporter during the invasion of Iraq, covered the Indian Ocean tsunami from Banda Aceh, Indonesia and has covered various political campaigns.  In his career, he has interviewed newsmakers ranging from Barack Obama, to Lionel Richie and the Prime Minister of Iraq.  John and his family reside in Westchester.
