barronsVIRTUAL - May 6 - Exclusive HRCW  Webinar with Thomas Forrest Kelly (PhD '73) on "Musical Performance: Then, Now And in the future"

Join Thomas Forrest Kelly (PhD '73), Morton B. Knafel Professor Emeritus of Music, for a spirited talk on what musical performance means (in a world where live performance has paused) and where music performance is headed in the future.

Thomas Forrest Kelly is the Morton B. Knafel Professor Emeritus of Music and taught the popular core class "First Nights," and authored a book by the same name, among others.

His talk will be expansive and free-ranging, across a variety of media, and it will draw upon (but not be limited to):
  • How did music and culture combine to shape the first performances of great masterpieces, like Beethoven's Ninth Symphony?
  • What is so "live" about live performance today?
  • What will musical performance look like in the "new normal"?
  • And how did Bugs Bunny bring classical music to life for kids everywhere?
Kelly has written extensively on the history of music and his many publications include: First Nights: Five Musical Premieres (2000), First Nights at the Opera (2004), The Practice of Medieval Music (2010) and Capturing Music: The Story of Notation (2014).  First Nights chronicles the events leading to the first performances of five enduring masterpieces--Monteverdi's L'Orfeo, Handel's Messiah, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, and Stravinsky's Rite of Spring--in the context of the cities, musical cultures and performance venues in which they were first heard.

Kelly received his bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina, and after completing a Fulbright grant, completed his PhD at Harvard.  He is a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres of the French Republic, a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, of the American Academy in Rome, and of the Medieval Academy of America; he was also awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of North Carolina.

Kelly is a frequent broadcaster and lecturer, and gave a talk several years ago in Bedford that was greatly enjoyed by the Club.  We are excited to welcome him back in a virtual context!
